Mass Immobilization : Nigeria
Its said that democracy is a process and not an event, this fact seem to have eluded the Nigerian masses. In the past weeks I watched President Obasanjo and his Vice President reduce themselves to a bunch of ill developed adults who have resorted to firing cheap shots at one another. Claims of mismanagement of funds have been followed by counter-claims of, even larger and more obvious mismanagements by the accusing party.These two actors are now like school kids having an all out fist fights right in front of their parents. This events have been very shameful and have resulted in the further tainting of the already blackened image of our beloved country.
I have read many commentaries about this wanton disregard for the rule of law and self respect. A few disturbing issues have raced through my mind all week;
Why are the masses in Nigeria so docile?
Why are we so quiet when our leaders partake in such childish and public displays? What goes through the minds of this looters when they concoct plans to ferry the country's monies overseas. Do this leaders, if we can still call them that, make any attempt to cover up this thieving. It appears this robbers have become so confident due to the silence of the masses in Nigeria. Could it be that the many years of military rule in Nigeria has resulted in the taming of the common Nigeria, where all the actions of the leaders, no matter how public are acceptable. Could this be viewed as a failure of democracy in our beloved country. Can democracy thrive in a country with no checks, such as ours. Its about time we Nigerians realize that nothing good will result from the lack of opposition to the injustice and embezzlement in Nigeria.
