Nolly...Nope...Hollywood...

In early Hollywood, white actors painted their faces and bodies with black paint in order to portray black actors, oh yes it was that bad. I see a parallel in recent movies. Why does Don Cheadle have to portray an African man in Hotel Rwanda? Was Forrest Whitaker the best Idi Amin poser on earth. This thought crossed my mind because I just read an article singing Whitaker's praise for his performance in the Last King of Scotland. I believe he did a good job, but I also know a good African actor would have done just as well with the same level of theatrical direction. What do you think? Agreed, our actors are still untested on the International scene, but even first time actors pull off great lead performances in the box office quite frequently.
Lest we rejoice for another man winneth the Oscar, let us bare in mind that that Oscar could have come home to Uganda. This could have been another opportunity to show case our continent. We have relative advantage on this one because we do not have to re-learn our accent. What do you think, am I asking for too much?
Confession
I have seen a total of two Nollywood movies in my entire stay on this planet, Hostages in UI, and one other. This is a bad record for a Nigerian Voltron (defender of all things Nigerian) like me. I have tried on many occasions to watch Nollywood movies but the first 3 minutes always killed my desire to be entertained by my country people. End of confession. I see some well made music video springing up on youtube though.

My good sister Aloted has some good stuff to say here. Preach it sister, preach it. Watch the standup economist do his thing here. There is a lot of talk about a recession in the air this days.

Touche. I completely agree with "...a good African actor would have done just as well with the same level of theatrical direction." But seriously, you think hollywood really cares about showcasing the continent? No they don't, thats why the only movies they make about Africa is always about AIDS, Malaria or civil war...well we could say thats another way of showcasing.

I didn't know that back in the day white actors use to paint themselves black, thats just...well its just...thats just swell.

Don't get me started on Nollywood. I just recently got into watching Yoruba movies and you know what, I would recommend them to anyone rather than the English movies. They make more sense, have a story line, better effects....I could go on.
I still can get over one of the english movies I watched, where somewhere in the middle of part 1 they introduced 2 new characters and they had the guts to tell me to look out for part 3? Surely, they were jesting. After that, I just stoped wastiing my time.

nollywood nollywood... I don't even know where to start with those movies, I may look like I'm criticizing my own people but they need to stop, the english ones irritate the life out of me, at least if you;ve passed murtala, we fit give you a passing grade on the phonetics they try to blow, or is it the slangs that are used out of context that we want to talk about, well I'll still give it up for the yoruba one's a couple of them that I saw were not bad at all, all that deep yoruba stuff cracks me up
From what I see, black people here are strugggling to get the oscar, ain't no way in the world this country will let it slide to another continent. American will always be, off the subject I can't wait to see how this Obama thing will play out.

well, yeah, fair enough, a good African actor could have done just as well, but who would know him? it's about money, not talent, omodudu - you know this...
