Move Trailer: Dafur Now...

Watch the Dafur Now trailer below. Learn more about the movie here. Posting about Dafur and Sudan gets harder and harder, I wander how Sharraf and Samira are doing. I just wonder. All of this seem distant and far off to those of us in Western Africa, but do you know that a large chunk of the Sudanese population can trace at least 50% of their ancestry to Nigeria? While you are at it, see the effects of the Liberian war on Liberian immigrants in far away New York, here and here. I once attended a church were 20 percent of the congregation were refugees from Sierria Leone, the images of babies with one hand still reman fresh and vivid. Wheew, story for another day.

Da Force

The UNSC has authorized the deployment of a UN-AU joint force to mediate in the Dafur region. A force of 26,000 military and police personnel, the largest intervention of its kind, charged with protecting the civilian population in this region. With hopes of disarming the janjaweeds and other mini-rebel groups. I hope Omar Bashir would tow the line now, since his government would be under more scrutiny. Omar was president when I visited Khartoum in 1995, I find it rather creepy that Omar still lords over Sudan till now. There can't be too much innovation coming out of a government like Omar's.

Though this initiative by the UN is 200,00 human lives and 2.5 million refugees late, I hope there will be a turn around and the region will eventually receive a long overdue paycheck from the new found oil and mineral wealth and the gains from trade with China.
Though the task ahead is delicate and enormous, my hopes are high and I have my fingers crossed. I am rooting for the real Sudan. Dafur needs your voice more than ever before, now is not the time to sit back.
Save dafur.
Maybe the interest of Nigerians would be piqued if only we realized the sheer volume of migration and inter marriage that exist between Nigeria and Sudan. Word on the street is that Omar's mum is Nigerian.

I Dropped The Ball On Dafur...

Upon reading the The Dirty Political Underbelly of the Darfur Conflict on the Pambazuka webzine, which Sokari pointed to me. I feel quite ashamed at my level ignorance with respect to the Dafur conflict. I have always had a passing interest in the Dafur conflict. It's a shame that an African like moi, who had the the oppourtunity to walk the scorching sunlight of Khartoum Talata. I have rocked a banner or two or even made a post on this blog to push the save-Dafur-message. But beyond that I have been so uninformed about this conflict.
I assumed the Dafur conflict was one and the same as the North-South civil war of the '90's. I learned today that the Dafur conflict is not the same as the Sudanese civil war that I read about as a youngster. This is different and much more venomous.
I nearly lost my claim to Duduness(blackness) due to this blunder, so as a form of penance. I will dedicate the next 5 post (border-ine spamming) on this blog to Dafur.
Sokari also dropped some useful links.

Not On Our Watch...

"One man, finishing his afternoon prayers, was restrained with metal shackles because he had been so traumatized by the bomb attacks on his village that he kept running into the desert, into danger and certain death."
Don Cheadle and John Prendergast's book on the Dafur crisis isn't getting as much mention in the African Blog-space as one would expect. Are we tired of the Dafur conflict? Don is one eloquent brother, heard him on NPR the other day, his speech was seamless.
