'Why Nigeria's Underdeveloped'...

I am no fan of public office holder who know the reason(s) why Nigeria has remained underdeveloped, but Mr. Ali touched on one of the central ideas of this blog. Leaders have had their fill at pillaging because we have allowed them with little or no struggle. However I would like to extend Mr. Ali's thoughts a bit further. These 'good' leaders, a group which Mr. Ali will be proud to belong, are at fault too. They have failed at fighting for and developing the infrastructure that can check the looting. Mr. Ali's speech is encouraging, but unfortunately he can not be exonerated here. Have a Merry Xmas.

Ibrahim Index of African Governance...

The Ibrahim Index of African Governance is out which I wrote about earlier this. The Ibrahim Index measures the degree to which essential political goods are provided within the forty-eight African countries south of the Sahara. The 2007 Ibrahim Index uses data from 2005, the last year with reasonably complete available data for nearly all sub-Saharan African nation-states.
I wonder why there isn't much media frenzy surrounding the rankings this time around. When the prize was announced it appeared to me that every blogger with a content about the mother continent seemed truly interested. I hope the level of interest picks up with time. The ranking and the prize would not work without the support of the masses. The original idea behind the prize was to leverage public opinion and goodwill as an incentive to encourage African leaders to do the right thing. Modelled after the political organization of the typical African community. What would a coronation evrent in an African village be like if all the villagers failed to show up.
